Michigan
has just passed a law that bans smoking in the workplace, including restaurants
and bars on December 10. Michigan follows 37 states to pass this law, which will
go into effect on May 1, 2010.The law prohibits workers smoking in almost all
the workplaces, even in bars and restaurants. There are also some exceptions,
such as tobacco specialty stores and cigar bars. Home offices and motor vehicles
are also allowed to smoke, even motor vehicles used for work. Michigan joins
with other states including New York, California and Illinois to implement the
smoking ban.According to the new law, smoking will be permitted on the gambling
floor of the Detroit-area casinos, but in the casino bars, restaurants and
hotels the smoking is not allowed. When the bill was signed by the governor,
Michigan became the 38th state to ban smoking in public places including
government buildings, bars and restaurants. Senator RAY Basham of Taylor fights
for a total smoking ban. He said, “We are moved the ball down the court, and
even scored a basket.” In the state Senate, the bill passed by a vote of 24 to
13. In the Michigan House, it passed by a vote of 75 to 30. 66% of Michiganders
supported a smoking ban in a March 2009 survey.

The
high definition DVD disk is capable of storing 30GB of information even after
using its both sides and on the other hand the storage ability of blu-ray disk
reaches 50GB (25GB per side). The current CD and the DVD tape format use the red
lazer for reading and recording the information onto the disk. Wavelength of DVD
is 650nm and that of the CD disk format is 780nm. Wavelength has been reduced
further in the new disk technology of blu-ray which was introduced by Philips
and Sony. Wavelength of blu-ray is 405 nanometers. The reason to use blue laser
in the blu-ray format is its shorter wavelength. Blu-ray technology is able to
record large volumes of HD sound and videos as well. Color of the lazer used in
blu-ray technology is somewhat blu-violet with wavelength shorter that red
lazer. The most powerful advantage of the blu-ray disc format in comparison to
the normal red lazer is its capability of recording more data volume keeping the
disk sizes same as the CD and DVD disk size. The picture quality is also clearer
with vividness and sharper colors as well. Spot size required by the blue-lazer
is also smaller. Pickup aperture of blue lazer is 0.85 nanometers. Density of
the blu-ray disk is very high that helps to fit 25GB data on each side of bluray
disc making total storage of 50 GB. Blu-ray technology is the optical storage
format’s new future. The advantages and benefits provided by the blu-ray disk
technology are far beyond that of the DVD format. Blu-ray technology supports
large recording capacity (25GB) on same physical size disk as of the DVD disk.
So it makes it 50GB when data is stored on both blu-ray disks’ sides (as 25GB
for each layer). HD video is supported by the blu-ray technology with the help
of modern encoders. Video (1920 x 1080p) is supported with VC-1, ACV and MPEG2
coding schemes. Higher video quality is enabled by the VC1 and ACV with lower
bit-rate in comparison to the common MPEG2 encoder. The latest audio encoders
are supported by the blu-ray disk technology that includes the DTS, Dolby
True-HD, DTS-HD and Dolby Digital (multi channel). These audio encoders on the
blu-ray disk can be utilized for up to eight audio channels (7.1). Enhanced
interactivity (Java based) along with internet connectivity and common menus
(DVD like) are also supported by the blu-ray disc technology. An open platform
is provided by the blu-ray format for the Java written connected and interactive
applications. It is very much clear that at the end of the high definition DVD
and blu-ray disk format war, the optical disk format’s future is the blu-ray
technology. Games can also be played using the blu-ray disk players and are also
capable of supporting the online simple games because of their enough
horsepower. Blu-ray disk format along with more capacity provides new
interactivity level as well. Blu-ray technology provides easy connectivity to
the internet and helps the users in instant downloading of subtitles and other
common features of movies as well. With blu-ray technology the consumers can
record HD-TV without any deterioration in the quality and can skip right away to
any spot on the blu-ray disk. One program can be recorded while another program
is being watched on the disk.
Nominated
for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Ray is a captivating and
inspiring true story about a man beloved by millions around the world. Based on
the life and times of Ray Charles Robinson, the film follows the popular
singer's life from the earliest days of his youth to the day of his triumph over
a heroin addiction. Featuring a soundtrack second to none in the history of
cinema, Ray is the total package in terms of a blockbuster film - great
characters blended together with an inspirational personal journey and an
unforgettable musical score. Actor Jamie Foxx gives an Oscar Award winning
performance so lifelike that it's difficult to distinguish his character from
the real Ray Charles. In short, Ray is a film that appeals to a wide audience
and one that literally transports its viewers into another era...Jamie Foxx
plays the role of Ray Charles Robinson, a black youth growing up in Florida
during the Great Depression. Forced to deal with the tragedy of his kid
brother's death, and the loss of his own vision at a young age, Ray nevertheless
triumphs over his disability when his mother refuses to let him feel sorry for
himself. Learning to play the piano from a neighborhood musician, Ray strikes
out on his own in the late-1940s for gig in Seattle.Ray's amazing talents are
instantly recognized, and he's never short of a gig. However, while traveling on
the road with several jazz bands, Ray begins using drugs, and he eventually
becomes addicted to heroin. When Atlantic Records buys Ray's contract, Ray's
career accelerates, culminating in several number one hits. Eventually, Ray
strikes a deal with NBC worth more than any other performer of his day, and he
and his wife Bea buy a luxurious Beverly Hills home with the world spread out
before them. But things aren't as perfect as they seem. Ray's infidelities have
taken a toll on his marriage, and his drug addiction threatens to ruin his
family, his relationship with his children, and his dealings with longtime
friends. Having already accomplished more than most men, Ray Charles must now
face the greatest challenge of his life - overcoming his heroin addiction and
living a clean life...Jamie Foxx is simply astounding in his portrayal of the
larger than life figure Ray Charles, and his effort was more than acknowledged
by his Academy Award victory and widespread critical acclaim. But less attention
is given to the outstanding supporting cast that surrounds Foxx. The role of the
young Ray Robinson's mother, Aretha, is played by Sharon Warren with such
passion that her character leaps off the screen and into one's memory as the
second most influential character of the film. Aretha's dedication to her son's
future and her demanding, yet loving, attitude toward his self-sufficiency are
admirable qualities. And the mother's influence on Ray is apparent in his drive
not to be treated by the world as a cripple.Further adding to the allure of Ray
are performances by Kerry Washington (Della Bea Robinson), Regina King (Margie
Hendricks), and Clifton Powell (Jeff Brown). Through the interaction of each
character, the viewer sees a reflection of the passion and driving life forces
that moved Ray Charles toward his musical destiny. Ultimately, Ray is a film
about relationships and dreams. The astounding heights of success achieved by a
blind man (and a black man in a segregated society) leave the impression that
any individual can achieve any feat to which he puts his mind. This is the true
gift of Ray, a feel-good film with a happy ending about a man who showed the
world that anything is possible. And that's why Ray is an absolute must-see
movie...
It
hit the market with a buzz revolution; the manner in which we looked at the
small piece of metal and plastic. Yes we are talking about the blu-ray disc
which has redefined the digital storage. Blu-ray which is often misspelled as
blue-ray, derives it's name from the blue-violet laser, used to read the disc.
The blu-ray format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of
high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data
unimaginable on normal DVD (Digital Versatile Disc).Blu-ray disc is a creation
of Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) which comprises of world's leading consumer
electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers including Apple, Dell,
Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp,
Sony, TDK and Thomson. Sony took the lead in launching the blu-ray disc in 2005.
Although the complete launch took almost a year, it was in 2006 that first
commercial blu-ray movie title hit the market.Blu-ray standard was established
to hold a standard-length movie in HDTV format, or high-definition television.
Such movies are displayed in significantly higher resolution and therefore they
require much more storage space. Although the blu-ray disc is identical to an
ordinary DVD or CD, the difference lies in the laser that reads it. Instead of a
conventional red laser that is used in CDs and DVDs a blue-violet laser which
has a shorter wavelength is used to read a blu-ray disc. What separates blu-ray
from a conventional DVD is it's high storage capacity. Compared to a
conventional DVD which stores 4.7 GB (giga bytes) data on a single layer and 8.5
GB on dual layer, a blu-ray disc has a whopping storage capacity of 25 and 50 GB
respectively. This however is just the beginning as future blu-ray discs will be
able to hold up to 200 GB of data. Blu-ray discs also have a higher data
transfer rate of 36 Mbps (megabits per second) compared to a DVD which transfers
at 10 Mbps. How Does It WorkDiscs store information in spiral grooves called pits
which run from the center to the periphery. The data is accessed when a laser
reads the other side of these pits i.e. the ‘bumps.’ If a disk contains a large
amount of information, the pits are packed closely together and are much
smaller. As the pits become smaller the laser needs to become more accurate in
its ability to read the data. This is exactly why we can store more mp3 songs in
a CD compared to a normal Audio CD.A blu-ray laser thus has the capacity to read
small information than a conventional laser used to read a DVD. Blue lasers have
a shorter wavelength (405 nanometers) compared to red lasers (650 nanometers)
and the smaller beam has the ability to focus on the pits more accurately. This
is due to the shorter wavelength that the blue light has, compared to a red on.
A blue-Ray discs can read information recorded in pits as small as 0.15 microns
twice as small as the pits on a DVD. Blu-ray has reduced the track pitch from
0.74 microns to 0.32 microns. All these things give it a huge storage
space.Although blu-ray discs have had their fair bit of criticism they without
any doubt are technology of the future. It is finding it's use in storing
high-definition video, blu-ray players, blu-ray recorder, blu-ray laptops and
also in popular gaming platform such as the PlayStation 3(PS 3 games).
When
buying a Blu-ray disc Player you will see a new feature that may be unfamiliar
to you. It is called the Blu-ray Profile. It is an important feature you need to
know because it is one of the main differences between blu-ray players and DVD
players. With DVD players there was a single hardware requirement but this is not
the case for Blu-ray players. It may be confusing at first but it is easy but
once you know what each profile means. And even though Blu-ray technology is
rather recent, you will find it is moving forward at a rapid pace so the format
is constantly changing and evolving. If you're not careful you may end up with
an "older" Blu-ray player. So, what exactly is a Blu-ray Profile? Well, they are
used to catalogue Blu-ray players and it determines the standard features and
specifications of audio and video codec abilities found in Blu-ray Players. What
a certain Profile a DVD player has tells you what set of features it supports.
Blu-ray Profile 1.0 was the first set of features and functions labeled for
discs and players. Then came Profile 1.1 and the latest is Profile 2.0
(BD-Live).Now, any type of blu-ray profiles will play a blu-ray disc but with
the different Profiles you get different extra features available to you.Bly-ray
Profile 1.0The first Profile was 1.0, it has no extra features. You may also
hear it referred to as "Initial Standard Profile" or "Grace Period Profile".
Being the first generation of Blu-ray players it meets the very basic standards
and minimum requirements. It has 64 KB of built-in persistent memory. Local
storage capability, Secondary video decoder, Secondary audio decoder and Virtual
file system are all optional. But it would be rare to find any Profile 1.0
Blu-ray player with any of these features. After Nov 27, 2007 all of Blu-ray
players manufactured were required to support Profile 1.1. But you still can
find Profile 1.0 Blu-ray players being sold. The Sharp BD-HP20U or the Pioneer
elite BDP-95FD, for example, are still available. If you are someone who does
not care for extra features and only interested in the movie, these Profile 1.0
blu-ray players maybe the right one for you.Bly-ray Profile 1.1Since Profile 1.1
is now the basic mandatory requirement of all Blu-ray players, these types are
the most common. The profile 1.1 Blu-ray Players have 64 KB built-in persistent
memory, 256 MB of local storage and a Virtual file system. But the main
difference with Profile 1.1 blu-ray players is the addition of
picture-in-picture function, also known as Bonus View. This is mainly use to
show a smaller picture in the corner of the movie. Usually having a director or
actor providing comments about the movie or a particular scene being displayed
in the larger picture. A secondary video and audio decoders are required for the
smaller picture. Most movie studios now apply this feature to all their standard
releases.Bly-ray Profile 2.0Although Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live, is not
mandatory for new Blu-ray players, more and more manufacturers are beginning to
producing these Profile types. The major different feature in Profile 2.0 is the
ability of an internet connection, usually through an Ethernet port, and it is
capable of interactive features when playing a blu-ray disc. Features such as
movie-related games, blogs and other content. While movie studios are excited
about this features and see it as the next "big thing" in home entertainment, so
far interactive content has been not been all that spectacular or riveting.
However, the possibilities to use this technology are vast and will surely
improve. The other technical details of Profile 2.0 are similar to Profiles 1.0
and 1.1. It has built-in persistent memory, Secondary video and audio
decoders(for picture-in-picture), a Virtual file system and 1 GB of local
storage. This large increase in storage from 256 MB that is in Profile 1.1 is to
accommodate downloaded material from the internet. One thing you should be aware
of is that some Profile 1.0 and 1.1 Blu-ray players have Ethernet ports. This is
not for download extra content but for firmware updates. When looking to purchase
a Blu-ray players, you are most likely to come across all three Profile Types.
So the question is, which one should I buy? Since the prices of Blu-ray Players
are rapidly coming down, your best option would be the Profile 2.0 because it's
the latest and the most future proof of all the Blu-ray Players. But if you're
not interested in special features or interactive capabilities, than considering
a Profile 1.0 or Profile 1.1 Blu-ray Player is a very reasonable choice and will
save you some money. Besides, you still be able to enjoy all and future Blu-ray
disc movies; you just won't be able to download extra content.
