The
optical disk technology has by far reached its potential in today's world. An
optical disk is a medium used for data storage and an optical drive is what's
used to read these disks and also to write on them. The Blue ray disk is very
much different from a normal DVD and consists of a ferromagnetic material that
is sealed with a plastic ray ban eyeglasses coating.
There are different kinds of optical disk drives and some of the famously known
one's are the Blue ray drives. The Blue ray drives enable the reading and writing
of data on to a Blue ray disk with storage capacities of 25GB to 50GB. Unlike
other disks, the Blue ray disks are readable and writable on both sides. The way
the Blue ray drives work is quite fascinating. The Blue ray drives have a laser
inside it. The computer can actually read and write data on to a Blue ray disk
because of this laser. During the whole disk reading process, a laser beam is
projected on the disk. This reflects a light. The light can change depending on
the magneto-optical Kerr effect. The BDA, also known as the Blue ray Disk
Association consist of some of the well known consumer electronic giants.
According to them almost all Blue ray drives should be capable of reading the
traditional type of DVD's and CD's. This is known as backward
compatibility.Although many consumers still use the standard DVD's and CD's to
watch movies and listen to songs, the Blue ray disk format has gained more
popularity over time. This is mainly because of its high storage capacity and
outstanding performance. Who would want to purchase a traditional DVD that can
store only up to 10GB instead of buying a Blue ray disk which can store between
25GB to 50GB?During the early days there were a few manufacturers who released
products such as Blue ray DVD players and Blue ray drives that played only DVD's
and not CD's. But today, many companies have rectified this problem by improving
the quality of their products. These days you will be able to purchase Blue ray
drives and players that can read DVD's as well as CD's.Having a high storage
space compared to other disks is one of the biggest advantages the Blue ray disk
has. Due to the increase of sales, manufacturers of desktop computers and
laptops have incorporated Blue ray drives into them. Majority of the computer
systems are shipped with the Blue ray drives installed in them. The Sony
Playstation-3 also has a Blue ray drive that's built-in.Competition between DVD
manufacturer's and Blue ray drives have become very fierce as the Blue ray disk
has more plus points than the DVD. After all who would want a DVD with low
storage space when a Blue ray disk can be purchased with higher storage space
and more features?
Blue
ray discs have revolutionized the digital and multimedia markets in a big way.
People are already on the hunt for a good blue ray recorder. Even though the
blue ray recorder is only available in Japan yet, it is expected to be released
else where very soon.Since the blue ray technology is quite new; many people may
lack knowledge about the product. The blue ray technology was first developed by
many leading companies involved in the production of digital goods. Sony and
pioneer started work on it first, when they were at war with Toshiba’s HD DVD
format which was later abandoned. Now the world is eagerly waiting for the world
wide spreading of this new high definition blue ray disc and the blue ray
recorder. Panasonic is claiming to have come up with a blue ray recorder that
can store up to 400 hours of one’s favorite movies. Isn’t that splendid? A blue
ray disc has high quality video and audio output giving anyone the ultimate
experience in the entertainment field. The blue ray recorder can be seen as a
very important tool especially for a teenager having a knack for movies and
games, or even a business professional in need of storing large amounts of
data. All leading companies such as Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic are now after
the major market share in blue ray recorder software. With a wide array of
devices and combo devices which will provide the consumer with more options the
blue ray recorder industry is set to be the most competitive market soon. Most
companies have gained a head start like Sony and Panasonic. Many more companies
has also been up for the challenge. But the biggest problem for these blue ray
recorders is that the consumers don’t get many options that come in blue ray
discs just yet. So many buyers may think twice before buying a blue ray
recorder. But the manufactures have played it well, by producing combo devices
rather than sole blue ray recorders. As a result, the consumers are able to
watch discs in many formats including the conventional DVD and CD format. What
all these means is that until the market is dominated by blue ray discs the
consumer is still capable of watching movies in any format. Blue ray recorder
devices are expected to dominate the market in the near future. Storing hundreds
of movies and watching them with one push of a button may become the norm in the
future. So the best thing we can do right now is get ourselves a blue ray
recorder and enjoy the show as it unveils. The author of this article has a

Digital
encoded audio & video information is stored on disks in form of pits. These
pits are spiral grooves. The pits on the DVD disk have to be more closely packed
and smaller in size to store more information. The reading laser has to be more
precise in order to read data from the smaller pits. DVD media uses red-laser
while blue-laser is used in the new Blu-ray media disc format. This is how the
Blu-ray got its name because of the blue laser. As the coming into being of
Blu-ray, many famous electronics manufacturers have produced their own Blu-ray
players, and as the coming into being of Blu-ray players, many software
developers have developed their own Blu-ray rippers for those guys who don’t
have a Blu-ray ripper or Blu-ray converter but want to enjoy the high quality of
Blu-ray. Red laser has 650 nanometers wavelength. On the other hand the
wavelength of blue laser is much shorter which 405 nanometers is. Smaller sized
laser beam can focus more accurately and precisely. The blue laser has the
ability to read to read data from the pits that have size of 0.15 μm (microns).
One micron is equivalent to 10-6 meters. The pits on the DVD disk are twice as
bigger than that of the pits on Blu-ray media disc. Track pitch in the DVD disc
is 0.74 microns which has been reduced to 0.32 microns in the Blu-ray media
disk. The shorter track pitch, smaller laser beam and smaller pits, all these
features assist the Blu-ray disk to record data of 25-GB on a single layer. Now
the users have more luxury as the recording capacity of Blu-ray media disk is 5
times more than DVD disk. The thickness of DVD and Blu-ray disk is the same. The
thickness of both disks is 1.2 millimeters. The data recording procedure is
different for both disk types. DVD disc has 2 polycarbonate layers and the
thickness of each layer is 0.6 mm. The information which is to be recorded on
DVD disk is sandwiched between these 2 layers. A layer on top of the recorded
information can lead to birefringence. In birefringence, the laser light is
refracted into 2 separate beams by the substrate layer. Data cannot be read from
the DVD disk if the laser light splits too wide. Disk tilt is another problem
that is caused if the surface of DVD disc is not totally flat or it is not
precisely perpendicular to the laser the light. The laser beam distorts due to
disk tilt. Very involved manufacturing procedure is required in DVD disk to
avoid these problematic issues. These problems have been solved in the Blu-ray
disk format. In Blu-ray disk format, the data is recorded on top of
polycarbonate layer whose thickness is 1.1 mm. This technique of Blu-ray
overcomes birefringence. So as a result the readability problems are avoided in
the Blu-ray disk format. In Blu-ray disc format, the objective lens and the
recording layer are very closer to each other. This closeness to the objective
lens virtually eliminates the disk tilt problem which enhances the performance.
The outer side of Blu-ray media disk is protected by a hard coating because the
recorded information is very closer to the blu-ray disk’s surface. This hard
coating feature makes the Blu-ray media unique, robust, efficient and more
advantageous. The hard coating layer protects the Blu-ray disk surface from
fingerprints and scratches. Therefore, the Blu-ray media disc is able to store
information for longer time periods. Blu-ray media format is more reliable and
robust. But you may get puzzled that what to do if I want to enjoy Blu-ray disks
on-the-go, for instance, on iPod, should I always bring a Blu-ray player? If you
like, you can just choose a Blu-ray ripper, such as a Blu-ray to iPod ripper or
Blu-ray to iPhone ripper, then rip and convert your Blu-ray disks to your PC and
portable devices. Well, it is all up to you. Hope you can enjoy your Blu-ray
life.
A
Blu-ray player is a device on which the Blu-ray Disc (BD) runs. BD was developed
for the purpose of recording, writing and playback of high definition (HD)
video, audio, photos and other digital contents as well as to store huge amounts
of data. It is a type of optical disc that has jointly been developed by the
Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and a group of the world’s leading electronic
manufacturers which include Samsung, LG, Sony, Apple, Dell, HP and many others.
The Blu-ray Disc has storage capacity of about 27 GB on a single layer disc and
a 50GB on the dual layer one. Besides, there are plans to develop a disc with
twice that amount of storage. The Blu-ray Disc as opposed to the DVDs (which
relies on a red laser to read and write data); uses the blue-violet data and
incidentally, derives its name from there too. The benefit of using this laser
is that it has a narrower beam which makes it possible to focus with greater
precision. Blu Ray allows one to store large amounts of data; indeed, recent
development has pushed its capacity upto 500GB! Because of their huge storing
capability, the Blu-ray player can easily carry your entire library of songs in
a single disc! These discs have upto seven times the resolution of DVDs and
therefore can produce the best possible picture quality with sharper details and
accurate colour and gives a three dimensional feel even without the 3D
technology! To watch blu-ray movies one doesn’t require internet connection.
Internet connection is needed for value-added features which include watching
recent movie trailers, web browsing, etc.The latest Blu-ray players are also
offering connectivity with the internet and are providing support for streaming
video on demand. Other applications include the customized internet radio from
Pandora and news and weather updates from sources such as the BBC. Though
usually these different applications depend on the model of the Blu-ray player,
nowadays they are quickly becoming a standard feature. Therefore, if you want to
experience a truly unique and beautiful HD visual with the perfect sound, go for
the Blu-ray player. But then, before buying keep in Ray Ban
3194 mind and make sure that your TV and the player have matching
connections.
The
time of conventional DVD had long come to an end. With the ever increasing
demand of more capacity and with the movies now being released in high
definition format, something new was required to store all this in. Toshiba and
NEC came up with a solution; the HD DVD. HD DVD was released way before the
Blu-Ray and was being used everywhere in the world but sony as usual had to go
and make something completely different than what everyone was using. Sony has a
history of doing this like developing the Beta-Max video tape when the whole
world was using VHS and Memory Stick flash memory when everyone else was using
SD memory cards. Similarly Blu-Ray was developed by Sony and they had to make it
completely incompatible with the HD DVD format. All this has accomplished is to
make the life of consumers more difficult. Now buyers have to choose between HD
DVD or Blu-Ray since both of them are completely incompatible with each other.
Furthermore there are titles, in the gaming as well as the movie industry, that
are going to be exclusive to either blu-ray or HD DVD.Before I get to my main
point of who will eventually win this so called format war, lets first compare
the two formats. Blu-Ray is basically the same as any conventional DVD but the
data on it is very tightly packed together. They made this possible by using a
more precise and accurate laser. They used a blue-violet laser beam instead of
the typical red beam used in DVD and CD formats. This allows blu-ray dvds to
hold massive amounts of data. Blu-Ray can store 5 to 10 times more data than a
conventional DVD. On a single layer Ray Ban
2143 disc they can hold 25GB of data and on a dual layer disc the capacity
doubles to 50GB.HD DVD, developed by Toshiba and NEC uses the same data storage
technology as the blu-ray. But it is not capable of holding as much data as the
blu-ray. The maximum amount of data that HD DVD can store is 30 GB. Though this
is much lower than blu-ray's 50GB it is still more than enough for movies in
high definition. It can easily be seen that with the way technology is going one
thing that we need more of is capacity. Softwares and games that used to come in
a single CD or DVD are now being packages as 2 DVD or 3 DVD packs. And with the
ever increasing bandwidth available to us people are downloading more and more
stuff from the internet. So its clear that the format providing the most
capacity will be the one to win the format war. Although the 30GB of HD DVD may
seem sufficient now but in a couple of years it will become obsolete just like
the DVD.
Once
people get a taste of Blu ray films and the features that make the format
superior to all others, one of the first questions they ask is, What other
movies will be available on Blu ray?. More and more movies, both old favorites
and new releases, are being sent out into the entertainment world in this
format, and there are some that have been announced to join the Hi Def family
this coming year. Although many claims are not confirmed, there are plenty of
rumors that give fans some clues as to what is in the works to be released.First
up on the list of anticipated titles is Metro Goldwyn Mayers The Princess Bride,
which was originally released in 1987. It has an expected release date of March
17, 2009, and is rated PG. Many of the details of the release are yet to be
announced, but the aspect ratio that it will be presented in is 1.85:1, the
video resolution is 1080p, and the audio is in English: DTS HD Master Audio 5.1,
which are typical of Blu ray films. List price for this release is
$34.99.Another classic that is rumored to join the family of Blu ray films is
Grease. Originally released in 1978, the movie runs 110 minutes and is rated PG.
Although there is not a concrete release date, the presenting aspect ratio of
the musical favorite is 2.20:1 and the video resolution will once again be at
1080p. If you are hoping for something a little more modern, Theres Something
About Mary is slated to be released on May 5, 2009. From 20th Century Fox in
1998 and rated R, this movie runs for 119 minutes. Although specs for the audio
and bonus material are not yet known, the visual presentation includes video
codec of MPEG 4 AVC, a video resolution of 1080p, and an aspect ratio of
1.85:1.Another addition to the Blu ray films collection will be the Tom Hanks
hit Big, also from 20th Century Fox. It was originally released in 1988, it runs
for two hours and ten minutes, and is rated PG. Fans can expect to be able to
purchase the film beginning on May 5, 2009, just in time for summer. No audio
specifications have been announced, but the video codec stands at being MPEG 4
AVC, the aspect ratio is 1.85:1, and the video resolution once again will be at
1080p.Some of the other titles that will become Blu ray films include Amadeus
(Directors Cut), Napoleon Dynamite, Office Space (Special Edition), Friday the
13th (Uncut) and many more as well.
